This week has seen the New Bridge community come together in response to the Paris tragedy. A minute’s silence was observed at both sites on Monday, and we remembered the victims in this morning’s assembly. Our Year 11 pupils spoke to the whole school and we played the Marseillaise as everyone made their way into the theatre. We were all moved.

Our young people have been busy across Oldham this week. As part of an employment session Mr Hanif and Mr Fairest’s Year 10 class visited Hollins Fire Station on Thursday. They had a tour around, watched the firefighters in action and even managed to have a go at operating the firehoses. Everyone had a wonderful morning and we have several firefighters in the making as you can see…

On Wednesday students from the Learning Centre took part in community work in Oldham and we were really impressed by their maturity and their willingness to get stuck into the tasks given them.

The Student Councils have held their first meetings, and a representative from the Oldham Youth Council joined the discussion at the Learning Centre where our young people had the opportunity to raise a number of issues with Governors. We will give you a detailed report next week!

Oldham’s Ability Counts Football Team was set up 9 months ago, establishing a weekly sports session for young people with a range of varying learning needs and disabilities. We’re thrilled to say that the team were the top scorers in the schools category! Josh, Team Captain, received both a finalist award and a winning class trophy – we will make sure we have a picture for you very soon.

On a final note, Parents’ Evening at the school site was a great success. We had great attendance and the feedback from parents and carers was very positive – many thanks for your continued support.

We would like to wish Michelle Lane, our Year 14 Pastoral Manager, good luck – she is a finalist in POINT’s (Parents of Oldham in Touch) ‘Passion for Parents’ Awards and the winners are being announced this evening at their Annual Conference…

Parents’ Evening at the Learning Centre starts at 4.15pm this Tuesday 24th November. Parents of our Year 13 and Year 14 students who are currently on the Activ8, Digit4ll and Lumenus pathways based at the school site are also welcome to attend (even though you may have been to the school event this week), as staff from both Bridging the Gap and Future Finders will be there to explain the exciting opportunities for next September that your child may wish to find out more about. See you all on Tuesday evening!

Let’s hope the weather is kind to us this weekend,

Judith and Roger
