Wow, what a busy week it has been! It’s a good job we’ve got the day off on Monday to recover.
The start of the Summer term has seen a new topic for our Key Stage 2 classes and Class 2 have got stuck in with their learning this week about the Romans. They have been focusing on the Roman raids and even testing themselves with a few Latin phrases!
In computing the children have been looking at the algorithms in Scratch before making predictions using logical reasoning. They have also been working hard in Science looking at the digestive system parts and functions.
In Class 3 this week, Mrs Pulman’s group have been working hard in Maths learning to tell the time. To help them conquer this, they have made their own clocks with lift up tabs to help them. The clocks are really good and very useful..
In Art, as part of their Romans topic, Class 3 have started to design a Roman mosaic. Everybody created a beautiful border. We all voted and selected Kyle’s masterpiece for the centre of our final piece which we are going to make as a group. We also chose Abu’s very bold border. We can’t wait to share photos of the finished design, it will look spectacular!
On Friday we had some surprise visitors from the Upper School. Mr Hopkins brought Stephen, Rainier and Alex, three of our old pupils, to see us which was really lovely. Stephen now dwarfs us all, they have all grown so much. A visitor we hadn’t seen before was Mr Hopkin’s dog, Patch, a beautiful little Jack Russell. Xavier was very brave and stroked Patch, even though he hasn’t stroked a dog before because he is quite wary of them. The children think that we should now get a school dog!
In assembly on Friday, Harvey was very excited to share his news from the Thursday evening. I have mentioned before that Harvey attends the Middleton and Chadderton Sea Cadets twice a week. He has been working towards his Yellow Module and is now Junior Cadet First Class! Harvey has already completed his Red Module which consisted of Unit Based Activities such as knowing some basic knots and boat terms, basic drill, unit structure etc. and also attending general unit evenings and activities. His Yellow Module has been about Community and Citizenship. Harvey has had to demonstrate his involvement in local community activities and show an understanding about diversity of religions, cultures and disabilities. Harvey has also completed a First Aid module and can be seen here checking if the ‘patient’ is conscious when rehearsing CPR techniques..
Our very own Mrs Elliott is the Chairwoman at this branch of Sea Cadets and it really is a fantastic organisation that provides children from the age of 10 with some amazing experiences. We have quite a few of our children attending regularly now and it’s brilliant when they share their achievements with us in school. Well done, Harvey!
Class 1 have been taking on the role of the teacher this week and what a marvellous job they have done. Mrs Shorthall and I spent Friday afternoon with both our eldest and youngest pupils. Class 1 were set a challenge of teaching the younger Class 5 some board games and they all did very well. They thought carefully about setting some ground rules and thinking about what skills they might want to develop. I think it’s safe to say they found it more difficult than they thought it would be. My favourite comment was Leo saying, “I’ve had enough of this, they just keep arguing and won’t listen to me!” Credit to him though, he coached the younger ones through the difficult game and didn’t give up. Rhianna told Mrs Sanderson she couldn’t believe that this was what us teachers had to do EVERY day as it was really hard work! Here are some photos of them at work
Class 6 have had a very exciting week. They have welcomed a new pupil, Brodey, who has settled in very well and they have had not one, not even two but THREE trips out! Monday morning saw a very wet trek around Strinesdale Reservoir hunting a Gruffalo. Miss Fell reported that the children were very excited as they were finding the clues and they all behaved well. The same afternoon they went over to the soft play area at Hollinwood Academy to complete some learning activities there. On Wednesday, they then spent the full day at Cannon Hall Farm and had a fantastic time. They fed animals, played on the park, saw the baby piglets (which seemed to be everyone’s favourite) and even got Mrs Sanderson and Miss Cubach on the zip-wire! As you can see from these photos, they had a great day..
