Hello and a very warm welcome back to a new term and the start of a new year here at Medtia Square. This blog will be changing slightly this year, as I will be reporting on the educational side of what we do here at Medtia and updates from the young people at Horizons can be found on the Horizons website here.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday our job coaches participated in a three day training course in ‘Systematic Instruction’ which is the nationally recognised technique for training students in a work place. The training really was inspirational and thoroughly enjoyed by our team. This will have a big impact on how we facilitate work placements in the future and will hopefully compliment our methods to ensure that all our students get the best possible opportunities to gain new skills when out on a work placement.

As you will be aware, this year we start a number of new initiatives here at Medtia Square, the first being our brand new Pre-Internship pathway. We have 15 young people in this group and they started back with us yesterday. Their form tutor is Mr Holland and they are currently being supported by job coaches Maria and Genna. These students will be participating in 2 and half days work experience each week and the rest of their time will be made up of Maths, English, ICT, Employability and Young Enterprise. We are throwing the young people straight into it, with placements starting next week at a local nursery, OCL, The Atrium Café and The Premier Inn Hotel. Good luck to all of our pre-interns on your first week’s placements!

Our Future Finders start back with us on Monday. Once again, this course has grown in size this year and we have 13 new interns starting the supported intership programme. Placements will continue at The Premier Inn and The Atrium but we are thrilled to have some new employers on board, including a private nursery, an additional Premier Inn Hotel at Oldham Central and some local retail stores in the town centre. I will let you know next week how the first week has gone for our new students.

Richard Monaghan will continue to be head of pastoral care for pathways and Nicola Nelson will continue in her role as pastoral manager for pathways. Our Activ8 boys have now moved to the ground floor where they now share a space with Lumenus, accessing the fantastic facilities on the ground floor at different times over the week. They, along with our Digit4ll students, have had a fantastic first week back and I look forward to letting you know how their first full week of lessons go next week.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Daniel
