Sorry I’ve not been able to update you on our progress recently – to say we’ve been busy is an understatement!

Over the last few weeks, our topic in school has been learning about WW2 and it’s safe to say the children have really enjoyed it. They have been so respectful and insightful about some of the things they have discovered and lots of fascinating conversations have been had.

Class 1 have been reading the book “Goodnight Mr Tom” which is a favourite of mine and the story of Willie Beech has really moved them. They were surprised that so many of the experiences described in the book actually happened to children their age.

They have made some of their own Anderson Shelters, like Mister Tom did and re-enacted using the table in Class 1 to hide under when the siren sounded..

Class 1 also paid a visit to the Commonwealth Graves in Middleton and did some research about the people who had lost their lives. As I mentioned earlier, they were extremely respectful and touched by what people had gone through..

When explaining about the role she plays in the remembrance parades, two boys, Finley and Donovan, said they would like to watch them. Well Mrs Elliott went one better than that and arranged for them both to join her unit from the Sea Cadets and March with them in the parade on Remembrance Sunday. We were extremely proud of them and the way they represented school. Both boys have since attended the cadets and are hoping to join soon.

Class 2 were interested to find out who the Dambusters were so Mr Cruz has based much of their learning around this and why the geographical features in our country played such a big part in the success of these daring missions. They went to Derwent Dam to see exactly where the bouncing bombs were tested. The children were amazed!

Class 1 have spent a lot of time towards the end of this week looking at teamwork and resilience. They’ve played Cornish Bingo where rather than just tell you the number, the caller might give you a sum to work it out. The children have all enjoyed playing this role and have often chosen to stay in at play time to play some more. Even games like tiddlywinks have had learning involved, with one pupil finding the flipping motion really difficult. He really had to use his determination and resilience to be able to continue playing the game.

Our iPad project is beginning to move along now. Three of us attended a Vision Planning Session on Tuesday and we take delivery of the staff iPads next Tuesday – very exciting indeed!! Once we’ve had some time to learn the new skills that we need, we will be using them in the classrooms and the children will get theirs too. We are going to be running some parent information sessions to let you see them in action and how they can transform the way in which your children will learn. I will let you know the date as soon as it is confirmed.

Class 3, Class 4 and Class 5 have also been working very hard and I will share some photos of them all next week. Class 3 were out in Liverpool on Wednesday and had a fantastic day exploring the real life air raid shelters, so watch this space.
