This week has been a busy week of planning for careers and employability activities over the next term. As you will have read in my previous blogs, earlier this year I was asked to be a National Careers Leader by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. As part of this work, we have received funding to secure a number of careers related activities for our students over the academic year. Some of the activities this term include:

  • Careers Carousel – this will be a full day at First Choice Homes, where students will rotate around 6 stands led by different areas of the business. These include construction, marketing and customer services, giving our students the opportunity to learn about roles available within the housing and construction industries.
  • Employer Engagement Event – we will be hosting a training event for local employers on disability awareness.
  • GM High – a visit to see a day in the life of a student at Manchester Metropolitan University.
  • Volunteer Action – a talk about the types of volunteer roles and opportunities available across Oldham.
  • ‘Changing Horizons – Building Skills for Life and Work’ at The Queen Elizabeth Hall.

This is really just a small selection of some of the opportunities coming up for our students. It’s a very exciting time!

We also have our first Parent Employer Network meeting on Thursday 28th February at 3pm. This group is being set up to bring parents and employers together to support us with our Employability strategy. If you are interested in joining us, please get in touch!

Another exciting development this week was for our Lumenus students who have been invited to volunteer at The Manchester International Festival. There is talk that they could be working with Idris Elba! As a big fan of Luther, I have obviously offered to support!!

Talking of Lumenus, I am going to hand you over to Oliver now for his ‘A Day in the Life’…

A day in the life of Oliver
Key Stage 5 Lumenus Pathway

Hi, I am Oliver and I would like to talk you through a typical Thursday in the Lumenus Pathway.

I am an independent traveller and I travel to Medtia on the bus.

On Thursday my first lesson is Maths (it’s a double Maths lesson). This week we are learning about speed, distance and time.
Then we have break with all the Pathways students and the pre-interns. I like catching up on my favourite shows at break time.

After break we have Pathway lessons where we go to Oldham Theatre Workshop..

In these lessons we are practising our workshop that we’ll be delivering to Hollinwood Academy this Monday! I have been working to deliver a game that is in the workshop that is about everyday heroes. I have been practising my delivery and I will continue delivering..

We finished the day with a peaceful guided meditation..

Congratulations to Dominic on being awarded this week’s ‘Worker of the Week’ for continually working hard and completing all his jobs when asked, even when he was not too keen. Well done, Dominic!

Next week we have our open evening for Bridging the Gap on Tuesday at 5.30pm at Medtia. Students who have shown an interest in joining our Bridging the Gap projects next year have had an invitation sent home.

Have a great weekend,

Head of Key Stage 5 Pathways
