Our Learning Centre assembly had a real celebratory feel today. We started by saying a massive well done to all the students who took part in last week’s show which was a huge success. I was immensely proud of everyone involved. DVDs are available to order for £5 and letters have gone home with further details (please check your ParentPay account). Here’s to the next one!

The highlight of this week’s assembly was the presentation of the latest DofE certificates and badges. I’m always amazed by just how much our students can achieve with self-belief, determination and the support, expertise and encouragement of Mr Taylor and his team. It’s truly amazing that, with some creative thinking and a lot of hard work, the DofE scheme can be accessed by all – we had students from our E-Base, Interactive Base, Nurture Group and the main body of the Learning Centre all receiving their respective awards. A special mention has to go to Cherrie who has achieved her Gold Award and will be off to St. James’ Palace to receive her certificate!

Well done all and thank you to everyone who came to support them!

  • Bronze Award ~ well done Michael, Lewis, Joseph, Terry, Jordan, Adil and Ellie..

  • Silver Award ~ congratulations to Joseph, Bobby-Joe and Junaid..

Terry and Lewis have now successfully completed their Silver practice expedition and Mr Taylor’s full report is here.

Our Interactive Base group will be heading off to Dunham Massey next week for their expedition (many of them now doing their Silver Award) and we know they’ll do their best yet again.

As we celebrated our students’ successes both within the show and their DofE achievements, I was reminded of our mission statement which has been exemplified over the last couple of weeks:

LEARNING TOGETHER, LEARNING FOR ALL, LEARNING FOR LIFE!

Next Thursday is Super Learning Day where students will be tutor group based for the day. The theme will be ‘Kindness within different religions.’ We introduced the theme within our Learning Centre assembly by watching the video “KINDNESS KEEPS THE WORLD AFLOAT” which shows just how far one act of kindness can go..

I am looking forward to sharing everything that the students have done within next week’s blog.

Student transition is well under way for both those Learning Centre students who are moving on to the Pre-Internship Pathway and Bridging the Gap, and for the current Year 11 pupils who will be joining us next year. It’s both an exciting and an anxious time, and staff are working hard to allay any fears and raise self–belief. We are holding a Transitions Evening for all new parents, carers and students on 19th June, however if you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact your pastoral team who are happy to answer any questions you may have.

The next meeting of our Parent and Carer Group is on Monday 13th May at 2pm. We have invited Kevin Howarth, the team manager of Oldham’s Adult Learning Difficulty and Autism team, to talk to parents about the transition from children’s to adult services and to answer any queries you may have around personal budgets. Shamin Akhtar, our bilingual support worker, will be at the meeting to help with any translating that may be required.

We know that those of you who have attended previous meetings have found them very useful and really appreciated the opportunity to speak to professionals. You’ve also enjoyed sharing your experiences, worries and stories with other families. We really hope you can join us this week and you may also like to make a note of next month’s meeting which will be on Monday 10th June at 2pm.

Have a great weekend,

Dawn
